Diane Powers’ popular Bazaar del Mundo in the Old Town is getting ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Opened in 1971, Powers created a unique San Diego shopping and dining experience that continues to draw thousands of visitors to Old Town Historic State Park each year.
A region that is still culturally rich and diverse
“Since its inception, San Diego has been a culturally rich and diverse region. This is due, in part, to historic businesses like Bazaar del Mundo, which has long celebrated the world’s most dynamic cultures, ”said Julie Coker, President and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority. “Kudos to Diane Powers, who has become a local icon in her own right as one of San Diego’s preeminent female business leaders and most successful business owners. “
Everyone is invited
Guests are invited to the “Bazaar del Mundo 50th Anniversary Fiesta and Market” starting Thursday, November 4 at 11:00 a.m. with a launch celebration at 6:00 p.m. The market square continues until Sunday, November 7 .
Thursday night’s kick-off celebration will feature a proclamation and appearance by Mayor Todd Gloria, other VIP guests, mariachis, folk dancers and longtime Bazaar del Mundo artist TINKU (a folk group Latin American), as well as birthday treats and other special surprises.
Customers can enjoy a bustling market filled with colorful and richly decorated stalls and a display of authentic art, crafts, jewelry, vibrant Mexican clothing and more. The animators will perform throughout the weekend.
“This November marks an important milestone for our businesses,” said owner and operator Diane Powers. “We couldn’t have done it without our dedicated customers and long-time dedicated staff, whose continued support has been the foundation of our success.
The market will feature many of Bazaar del Mundo’s favorite Latin American artists, including master potters Mata Ortiz, woodcarvers from Oaxaca, Zapotec weavers, as well as several local artists.
The artists include:
Pedro Montaño: Oaxacan weaver from Teotitlan del Valle showcasing wonderful rugs and wool rugs in traditional and contemporary Mexican designs and performing demonstrations on handmade looms.
Alessandra Thornton: An Ecuadorian jewelry designer Tagua showcasing her handmade pieces which are all created in an eco-friendly and vegan way.
Gerardo Ortega Lopez: Gerardo’s bright and whimsical clay figures include recognizable depictions of brightly painted roosters on bicycles, cats and dogs driving cars, and more.
Sara Yunuen Gutierrez Garcia: Sara brings with her a fine selection of traditional hand-embroidered clothing from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca.
Inside the colorful shops of the Bazaar del Mundo, the shelves will be filled with gifts and goods imported from around the world, as well as a myriad of books on travel, culture, architecture, arts and crafts.
See you there, San Diego!
